Transparency International Hungary’s Activities Deemed “Harmful” for the Country
The latest investigation by the Sovereignty Protection Office has revealed that the Transparency International Hungary Foundation (TIH) is engaged in disinformation-based influencing activities that are harmful to Hungary. The investigation concluded that TIH is stigmatizing the country and Hungarian state institutions through its political pressure tactics.
The Office’s investigation, which was launched on June 18, 2024, found that TIH operates as part of a global lobbying network that has been active for over thirty years, serving the interests of powerful foreign entities. The funding, activities, and connections of TIH were scrutinized, revealing that the organization receives significant financial backing from the World Bank’s states with the most voting power, the European Commission, and major donors like George Soros’ Open Society Foundations. More than 80% of TIH’s funding comes from foreign sources.
It was also highlighted that the concepts of transparency and anti-corruption, which TIH promotes, are used as tools to advance the economic and political interests of the United States. The Corruption Perceptions Index, produced by TI, was identified as a key weapon in their disinformation campaign against Hungary. This index, controlled by the organization’s financiers, is manipulated to influence international perceptions of countries, including Hungary.
TIH’s shadow reports to the European Commission, based on partial information, rumors, and media reports, were identified as sources of disinformation that aim to discredit Hungary and its governmental bodies. The organization’s lack of transparency and refusal to cooperate with the investigation further raised concerns about its true intentions and operations.
Overall, the report concluded that TIH’s activities pose a real threat to Hungary’s political, economic, and social well-being. By spreading disinformation and undermining the country’s international standing, TIH’s actions are detrimental to Hungary’s interests. The investigation shed light on the organization’s opaque practices and highlighted the need for greater scrutiny of its activities.
