Transportation Incidents: Cargo and Passenger Vehicles Involved in One-Third of 2024 Accidents

In 2024, Uzbekistan faced a total of 9,364 road traffic accidents, out of which 3,045 (32.5%) involved cargo and passenger transport. Alarmingly, nearly half of these accidents were related to Damas vehicles.
During a session of the Legislative Chamber, the Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov, presented the statistics regarding accidents involving cargo and passenger vehicles. The breakdown of incidents is as follows:
– Damas microvans, commonly used for public transport, accounted for the highest number of accidents, with 1,592 cases (52.3% of the total).
– Freight vehicles were involved in 558 accidents (18.3%).
– Buses were responsible for 137 accidents (4.5%).
– Minibuses contributed to 29 accidents (0.95%).
Furthermore, it was reported that 351 accidents (3.7%) occurred due to drivers not complying with work and rest schedules, leading to fatigue and falling asleep at the wheel. These incidents resulted in 189 fatalities and 285 injuries.
Falling asleep while driving is a major contributor to road traffic accidents on a global scale. It is essential for drivers to strictly adhere to rest schedules, especially during long-distance journeys, to prevent tragic outcomes. Safety on the roads should be prioritized by all individuals to reduce the number of accidents and save lives.
