TRNC Students at Turkish Universities Exempt from Tuition Fees – BRTK
Minister of National Education of Turkey, Nazım Çavuşoğlu, recently made an announcement that has brought joy to many Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus nationals. In his statement, he revealed that all TRNC citizens who will register for new or renew their registration at Turkish universities in the 2024-2025 Academic Year will be exempt from paying tuition fees.
This decision comes as a result of a ruling by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which extends the same rights to TRNC students as those enjoyed by students from the Republic of Turkey. With this new regulation, TRNC citizens studying at universities in Turkey will now benefit from the same privileges as their Turkish counterparts.
The specific details of this policy were outlined in the ‘Decision on the Determination of the Contribution Fees and Tuition Fees to be Taken as Student Contribution to Current Service Costs in Higher Education Institutions’, which was published in the Official Gazette on July 2, 2024.
Furthermore, the amendment to the 3rd article of this decision has made TRNC students who enroll in state universities through Foreign Student Admission Quotas or YKS quotas eligible for reduced tuition fees.
In response to inquiries about whether this policy applies to current students, Minister Çavuşoğlu confirmed that students who are already enrolled and will renew their registration for the upcoming academic year will also benefit from the fee waiver.
This announcement has been met with gratitude from the Turkish Cypriot community, with Minister Çavuşoğlu expressing appreciation to President Erdoğan, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, and the President of the Council of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, for their unwavering support and commitment to the advancement of Turkish Cypriot youth in education. This generous and steadfast support from the motherland, Turkey, is sure to empower Turkish Cypriot students as they pursue their academic goals and dreams for the future.
