Trouble Brewing in Izmir: More Risk than Istanbul, Warns Breaking Turkey News
Izmir, Turkey’s third-largest city, is facing a higher earthquake risk than Istanbul, according to Sinancan Öziçer, President of the Izmir Branch of the Chamber of Geophysics Engineers. Öziçer emphasized that districts such as Karsiyaka, Cigli, Bayrakli, Bornova, Konak, Balcova, Narlıdere, and Guzelbahce in Izmir are at particular risk due to the presence of an alluvial layer that can amplify earthquake waves.
The alluvial layer, which is 80, 100, and 120 meters thick in some areas of Izmir, can significantly increase the amplitude of earthquake waves, making the city more vulnerable to seismic activity. Öziçer warned that in the event of a magnitude 7 earthquake, Izmir could face catastrophic consequences, with an estimated risk of losing more than 117 citizens.
The prevalence of illegal structures in Izmir adds to the city’s vulnerability, as many buildings have not received engineering services and are not constructed according to safety regulations. Öziçer highlighted the urgent need for stricter building regulations and enforcement to mitigate the risks posed by these structures.
In 2019, Öziçer noted that there were licensed buildings in Izmir that did not receive engineering services, making it one of the cities with the highest number of illegal structures in Turkey. The lack of proper oversight and regulation in construction processes contributes to the city’s susceptibility to earthquake damage.
Despite the challenges, Öziçer pointed out that buildings constructed in compliance with the earthquake regulations implemented after 2019 are more resilient in the face of seismic activity.
