Turkey Surpasses One Million Sustainable Hotel Beds

Over 1 million hotel beds in Turkey have been recognized for meeting sustainable tourism requirements. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey shared this data during the World Travel Market exhibition in London. As part of Turkey’s National Sustainable Tourism Program, more than 7,500 hotels with a total of 1,044,189 beds have received certificates and confirmation for their compliance with sustainable tourism requirements.

Turkey has been working in collaboration with the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism on this certification process, making it the first country in the world to sign an agreement at the state level for sustainable tourism. The country showcased its leading destinations, products, and sub-brands at the World Tourism Exhibition, including the “Turkish Riviera”, “Turkestan: Coast of Happiness”, “New Trend: Istanbul”, “Cappadocia: Land of Fairy Tales”, “Turkish Black Sea”, and “Nature of Turkey”. Visitors were also introduced to Turkey’s cycling routes and 50 types of sustainable tourism destinations across the country.

Turkey is among the leading countries in the world where sustainable tourism is mandatory and accommodation facilities must be certified by law. The National Sustainable Tourism Program has resulted in the certification of 1,144 accommodation properties in Antalya, 966 in Istanbul, 639 in Mugla, and 488 in Izmir. In the first nine months of 2023, over 45 million people visited Turkey.
