Ankara to Host Türkiye-Sweden Security Mechanism Meeting
Ankara is set to host the Türkiye-Sweden Security Mechanism Meeting, where discussions will focus on the steps that Sweden is expected to take against PKK/PYD-FETO and cooperation options in the defense industry. This important meeting, established at the NATO summit in 2023, was initially scheduled to take place in September but was postponed due to the malfunction of the Swedish delegation’s plane.
The meeting will be attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan, Minister of Internal Affairs Ali Yerlikaya, Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard, and Swedish Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer. One of the key topics on the agenda will be the expected steps from Sweden in the fight against terrorism, with a focus on additional measures against organizations such as PKK/PYD and FETO, including issues related to financing terrorism and propaganda activities.
Turkish officials will also address concerns about the rise of right-wing movements in Europe, particularly issues like Islamophobia and racism, during the discussions with their Swedish counterparts. Furthermore, cooperation options in the defense industry, following the lifting of restrictions, will also be explored during the meeting.
In 2022, at the NATO summit, the Türkiye-Sweden-Finland Tripartite Agreement was signed, committing Sweden to strengthening its anti-terrorism efforts. As a result, Sweden implemented various constitutional and legal amendments, including the closure of the Swedish bank account of the so-called “Kurdish Red Crescent,” a key financing source for the PKK in Sweden.
