Turkish Minister Uraloğlu Reveals: Turkey Ranks 12th in Global Rankings
Turkey currently has a total of 140,138 active seafarers, according to Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu. During a recent event held in honor of World Seafarers’ Day, Uraloğlu highlighted the importance of maritime in global trade and the significant role it plays in the economy. He mentioned that Turkey ranks 12th in the world in terms of its merchant marine fleet, with 2,028 ships and a total of 48.9 million deadweight tons.
In an effort to enhance the maritime sector, Uraloğlu announced that changes will be made to the Seafarers and Pilots Regulation. Among these changes, the YÖKDİL exam score will be recognized as valid for Turkish seafarers to meet the English language requirement. The ministry also aims to increase the number of Female Sailors, with 148 female students set to do internships on international ships.
Moreover, Uraloğlu emphasized that the government is focused on improving the training and qualifications of seafarers. Every year, around 3,600 officer candidates are trained to work in the deck and machinery branches of the commercial fleet. Additionally, efforts are being made to provide technical and legal support to Turkish seafarers worldwide, and agreements have been signed with 37 countries to recognize mutual competences.

The government will continue to support and promote the seafaring profession, while also fostering gender diversity and enhancing training programs for aspiring seafarers.
