A recent video shared on AFAD’s social media platform highlighted the Turkish Earthquake Hazard Map, a crucial tool for understanding and mitigating earthquake risks in the region. Implemented in January 2019, this comprehensive map was developed through the collaboration of numerous researchers and experts from various universities and public institutions.
The map is designed to illustrate earthquake hazards by indicating the highest ground acceleration in different areas. According to AFAD, Turkey is home to 485 active fault segments, with colors ranging from light yellow to dark red on the map representing the increase in acceleration risk—from low to high. In a detailed video presentation, key figures from the Earthquake and Risk Reduction department shared insights into the map’s development and significance. Orhan Tatar, General Manager of Earthquake and Risk Reduction, emphasized the extensive research that went into creating the map. He noted that it integrates both historical data and recent surveys of active fault lines.
Aykut Akgün, Head of the Earthquake Department, explained that this new map represents a significant evolution from the previous version used between 1996 and 2019. The earlier map categorized earthquake risks into five distinct degrees; however, the current version focuses solely on localized ground acceleration measures, providing a more precise risk assessment.
Accessibility and Application
Teoman Selçuk Köksal, President of the Earthquake Engineering Group, mentioned that the Earthquake Hazard Map can be easily accessed through the e-government portal. He highlighted its importance in various applications, particularly in designing earthquake-resistant structures. Civil Engineer Zehra Özçelik noted that the map uses a color gradient to indicate varying levels of acceleration risk, aiding users in understanding the potential dangers.
