Turkmen Embassy in Ukraine Hosts Celebration of Traditional Turkmen Carpets
The Embassy of Turkmenistan in Ukraine Celebrates Turkmen Carpet Holiday
On May 16, 2024, on the eve of the Turkmen carpet holiday, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Ukraine organized a special event with the participation of members of the Club of spouses of heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Ukraine, representatives of the Club of family members of Ukrainian diplomats, and representatives of the Ukraine State Enterprise – Directorate-General for Rendering Services to Diplomatic Missions.
The main theme of the event was Turkmen carpets, symbolizing loyalty to ancestral values and the continuation of national traditions. Participants were given a tour of the history of Turkmen carpet weaving, learning about the unique techniques of this ancient art passed down through generations. Turkmen handmade carpet weaving has a rich history, with ancient samples of Turkmen carpets displayed in museums worldwide.
A highlight of the event was the discussion of Turkmen national patterns – gols, which are not only decorative elements but also represent the history and identity of the Turkmen people. Guests were informed about the National Museum of Turkmen Carpet in Ashgabat, the Guinness World Record-holding “Altyn Asyr” carpet, and the inclusion of Turkmen carpet art in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
The exhibition showcased a variety of handmade carpet products, traditional jewelry, clothing, paintings, and handicrafts reflecting Turkmen traditions and modern fashion trends. Additionally, guests had the opportunity to explore book products, including works by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov translated into Ukrainian. Publications on the renowned Turkmen poet-thinker Magtymguly Fragi and the celebration of his 300th anniversary were also featured.
The event provided a unique insight into Turkmen culture and art, leaving participants impressed by the beauty and significance of Turkmen carpets. As the holiday honoring this valuable tradition approaches, the celebration served as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage preserved and cherished by the Turkmen people.
