Turkmenistan Delegation Participates in High-Level Meeting in Astana

The delegation of Turkmenistan, led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahri Bashimova, joined a significant high-level meeting commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action. The meeting took place in the city of Astana on February 6.

Titled “Five Years to Implement the 2030 Agenda: Prospects for Central Asia,” the event brought together leaders and representatives from ministries and agencies of Central Asian countries, with a focus on gender equality issues. The primary objective of the meeting was to establish a platform for high-level representatives of Central Asian countries and other key participants to accelerate progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

During her address, Mahri Bashimova highlighted Turkmenistan’s active gender policy, which has aimed to promote equal participation of women in all aspects of public and political life since the country’s early years of independence. Gender development issues are integrated into all national socio-economic development programs in Turkmenistan, emphasizing the further inclusion of women in the country’s socio-economic and cultural advancement.

It was emphasized that Turkmenistan has implemented the “Law on State Guarantees for Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men,” aligning with the provisions of relevant international conventions ratified by the country.

The high-level meeting provided a platform to address crucial topics such as the Regional Review of Beijing +30, progress on SDG 5 in Central Asia, and financing gender equality initiatives.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Mahri Bashimova held discussions with Belén Sanz Luque, the regional director of “UN Women” for Europe and Central Asia. During the meeting, plans were discussed for Turkmenistan to host major regional and international events, including the Forum of Women from Central Asian and European Union countries, as well as the Dialogue of Women from Central Asia and Russia.

Mahri Bashimova extended an invitation to Belén Sanz Luque to participate in events organized as part of the International Year of Peace and Trust.

Overall, Turkmenistan’s active participation in the high-level meeting in Astana underscores its commitment to advancing gender equality and sustainable development goals in the region.
