Turkmenistan Prepares Special Events for 120th Anniversary of Sahy Jepbarov’s Birth
The traditions of folk performance in Turkmenistan have deep roots, tracing back to ancient times. One of the most cherished aspects of this cultural heritage is the art of bagshy, which has been officially recognized by UNESCO. Among the notable figures in Turkmen bagshy art is Sahy Jepbarov, a talented musician and composer whose impact on the country’s music scene cannot be overstated.
Sahy Jepbarov, a student of esteemed bagshys Tachmammet Suhangulyyev and Hally Bagshy, developed a unique style influenced by his mentors. He composed over 200 songs, drawing inspiration from the works of both modern and classical Turkmen poets. His recordings from the 1930s are preserved in the archives of Turkmen Radio, showcasing his musical prowess.
Throughout his career, Sahy Jepbarov established folk instrument ensembles and musical groups in various cities in Turkmenistan. He served as the leader and soloist of the State Philharmonic of Ashgabat and was a founding member of the Union of Composers of Turkmenistan. His contributions to the development of professional music in the country are significant and enduring.
As the 120th anniversary of Sahy Jepbarov approaches in January 2025, a conference will be held in Arkadag to commemorate this milestone. Distinguished guests such as People’s Artist Saragt Babaev and People’s Artist Yolaman Nuryyev will be in attendance, along with Deputy Sahyberdi Jepbarov. The concert will feature performances of Sahy Jepbarov’s songs, set to the poetic works of Magtymguly, Gara Seyitliyev, and Kerim Gurbannepesov, paying tribute to the legendary bagshy and his enduring legacy in Turkmen music.
