Turkmenistan President Joins Mass Bike Ride
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan joined in the celebrations of World Bicycle Day by participating in a mass bike ride held in the capital. The event, which took place on June 3, 2024, was part of the international holiday that has gained recognition in the United Nations calendar.
The tradition of celebrating World Bicycle Day was established following a Resolution initiated by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, which was unanimously adopted at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in 2018. In 2022, Turkmenistan proposed and saw the adoption of a new Resolution titled “Integration of mass cycling into public transport systems to achieve sustainable development” at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The mass bike ride in Ashgabat began at the iconic “Bicycle” monument, where President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, along with officials, students, athletes, and members of the diplomatic corps, started the journey along the city’s avenues. The route of the ride was lined with participants from various organizations and sectors, highlighting the unity and spirit of collaboration in promoting cycling as a means of sustainable development.
During the ride, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov took the opportunity to discuss the progress of city infrastructure projects and environmental initiatives with Deputy Prime Minister B. Annamammedov. The President emphasized the importance of maintaining environmental well-being in the city, creating comfortable living conditions, and promoting sports activities for the people of Turkmenistan.
After completing the ride at the Rukhyet Palace, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov expressed his gratitude to all the participants and wished them health and success. Similar mass bike rides were also organized in other cities across Turkmenistan to mark World Bicycle Day.
The event demonstrated the commitment of Turkmenistan to promoting cycling as a sustainable and environmentally friendly means of transportation, as well as the importance of sports in fostering peace and unity among nations and peoples. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s participation in the mass bike ride further emphasized the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for all citizens through active and healthy initiatives.
