Turkmenistan’s National Commission for UNESCO Meeting

The National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO recently held a meeting on 15 February 2025 at the premises of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. Various high-level officials including Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for UNESCO, and heads of different ministries and agencies attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Meredov highlighted the importance of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCO, emphasizing the country’s commitment to such partnerships. The Commission reviewed the outcomes of its activities in 2024 and established key priorities for the year 2025.

One significant achievement in 2024 was the inclusion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of poet Magtymguly Fraghi in the List of significant dates for joint celebration with UNESCO. This led to various important events, including the 10th Meeting of the National Commissions for UNESCO of the TURKSOY member countries held in Ashgabat in May 2024.

Throughout the year, meetings, consultations, and discussions were held with UNESCO representatives and its regional offices, focusing on cooperation in science, education, culture, and ecology. These interactions resulted in the adoption of crucial documents and decisions regarding future collaborations with UNESCO.

Future plans include proposing national values for inscription into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and working towards strengthening Turkmenistan’s role within UNESCO’s structural units. Additionally, discussions were held regarding joint events in relation to the announcement of 2025 as the “International Year of Peace and Trust”.

The meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO underscored the country’s dedication to promoting cultural heritage, international cooperation, and peacebuilding efforts through its partnership with UNESCO.
