Turkmenistan’s Youth Leading Climate Action

Turkmenistan’s youth are stepping up to lead the charge in climate initiatives, as evidenced by a recent meeting held on 3 September 2024 at the Turkmen State Agricultural Institute in Dashoguz. This gathering, organized by the Government of Turkmenistan in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the Embassies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates in Turkmenistan, brought together young people from the region to discuss pressing environmental issues and explore avenues for youth involvement in combating climate change.

Participants at the conference, ranging from ages 17 to 35, included young ambassadors of the Sustainable Development Goals, eco-activists, students, and representatives from UN agencies, the British Embassy in Turkmenistan, and various Turkmenistan ministries. The conference featured thematic sessions where Turkmenistani youth engaged in dialogue about topics such as agriculture adaptation and sustainable natural resource management.

Following these discussions, each group formulated recommendations to be included in the draft version of the Youth Statement of Turkmenistan. This statement, once finalized after a series of thematic conferences throughout the country, will be presented in Ashgabat. Ultimately, a Youth Statement will be adopted, reflecting the aspirations and perspectives of Turkmenistan’s youth on UNFCCC processes. This statement will be showcased at the Conference of Youth in Baku (COY19) and integrated into the official global stance of YOUNGO at COP29.

With Turkmenistan’s youth taking proactive steps to address climate challenges, it is evident that the country’s young generation is committed to making a positive impact and shaping a sustainable future for all.
