Lonely people on the rise in metropolitan cities
A recent report from TURKSTAT has revealed that the number of single households in Turkey has surpassed 5.3 million, with a significant portion of those individuals residing in metropolitan cities such as Istanbul. In fact, Istanbul alone is home to 943,363 people living alone, making it the province with the highest number of single households in the country.
The data released by TURKSTAT also shows a steady increase in the number of people living alone in Turkey each year. This trend has been particularly pronounced in the past two years, coinciding with the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, the number of single living individuals reached 4,404,997, and by the following year, it had risen to 5,321,540. This represents a 71 percent increase in the number of people living alone in Turkey over the past decade.
According to TURKSTAT, a significant portion of the population in metropolitan cities have never been married. In fact, the data shows that 29 percent of the population falls into this category. The province of Istanbul leads the way in terms of single living individuals, followed by other major cities such as Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and Bursa.
Furthermore, the data also reveals an increase in the rate of divorce in Turkey, now standing at 5 percent. This trend is especially pronounced in certain provinces such as Hakkari, Sirnak, and Siirt, where the proportion of never married individuals is as high as 45 percent.
As the number of people living alone continues to rise, it is clear that loneliness is becoming an increasingly prevalent issue in metropolitan cities. It is important for policymakers and community organizations to address this trend and provide support for individuals who may be struggling with feelings of isolation and loneliness.
