Twin Polar Bears Arrive at Nyíregyháza Zoo

Polar bear twins have been born at the Nyíregyháza Zoo in northeastern Hungary. The cubs, born to an eleven-year-old female named Snezhana, are healthy and thriving, and visitors will soon have the opportunity to see them, announced the zoo’s director, László Gajdos.

The birth of the cubs took place in November last year, but it was kept a secret until now as the first three months are crucial for the survival of polar bears. The zoo staff installed a camera in the polar bear cave to monitor the birth and development of the cubs.

“They are now so active that we hope they will survive and leave the cave with their mother in a week or two, and then visitors will be able to see them,” said Gajdos.

While waiting for the cubs to make their public debut, the zoo has released a two-minute compilation video showing the moments from the birth of the cubs until they were eleven weeks old. Additionally, the zoo’s online platforms will showcase a daily footage from the previous day, allowing visitors to follow the growth and development of the little polar bears.

In nature, pregnant polar bears retreat to their dens during the harshest part of the polar winter and enter a state of prolonged sleep. They give birth to their young after an average gestation period of 240 days. The newborn cubs are small, weigh about 0.6 kg, and spend about three months in the snow cave under the care of their mother.

The Nyíregyháza Zoo is excited to share this joyful news with the public and invites everyone to witness the adorable polar bear twins as they grow and explore their surroundings. Visit the zoo’s online platforms for more updates and footage of the cubs’ daily activities.
