Measles Outbreak in Kyrgyzstan Claims Two Lives in 2025
Since the beginning of 2025, Kyrgyzstan has reported two deaths from measles, according to the Republican Immunoprophylaxis Center. This marks a significant decrease from the five deaths recorded in the country in 2024.
As of February 10, 2025, at least 2,046 cases of measles have been registered in Kyrgyzstan, with the highest incidence seen in Bishkek, where 1,291 cases have been reported. The Chui region follows with 311 cases, while other regions such as Osh, Osh region, Batken region, Jalal-Abad region, Issyk-Kul region, Talas region, and Naryn region have also seen a number of cases.
It is concerning to note that almost 96 percent of the patients were not vaccinated against measles, with reasons ranging from age limitations to refusal of vaccination. The vaccination status of 7 percent of patients remains unknown.
The Republican Center emphasized that the rise in measles cases is primarily due to the increasing number of refusals for routine immunization against measles and rubella among children. In response to the situation, the Ministry of Health has intensified preventive and anti-epidemiological measures to combat the spread of measles in the country.
Health officials urge the public to prioritize vaccination against measles and other preventable diseases to safeguard the well-being of the population and prevent further outbreaks.
