“Two Women Compete for Ombudsman Position in Kyrgyzstan”
Kyrgyzstan’s parliamentary committee on constitutional legislation has announced two candidates for the position of Ombudsman in the country. The Ata Zhurt Kyrgyzstan faction has nominated former Deputy Prosecutor General Dzhamilya Dzhamanbaeva, while the Yiman Nuru faction has nominated Kulira Kubatova.
Previously, ex-deputy Mirlan Dzheenchoroev was nominated by the Alliance, Yntymak factions, and Eldik deputy group. However, he refused to run for the position. The Ishenim faction has also announced their intention to support their candidate, lawyer Kanymbu Karabayeva. Meanwhile, staff members of the Ombudsman’s Institute have nominated Askat Azarbekov and Urmat Aralbaev.
The Ombudsman’s role in Kyrgyzstan is to ensure that human rights are upheld and that government agencies are accountable to the people. The election of a new Ombudsman comes after the previous holder of the position, Kubat Otorbaev, resigned in April 2023.
The parliamentary committee will now consider all of the nominees and make their decision on who will become the new Ombudsman. It is a crucial role in a country where concerns around human rights violations have been raised.
