Two Years Later, Fire Still Rages in Heart-Wrenching Photo – Latest News from Turkey
It has been two years since the devastating earthquake that struck Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, and 10 other cities, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The memories of that tragic day are still fresh in the minds of those who survived.
One poignant image from the aftermath of the earthquake has stuck with many people. A photograph taken during those chaotic days showed a father named Mesut Hançer holding the hand of his daughter under the rubble at Ebrar Site. Today, Hançer visited his daughter’s grave to pay his respects and remember the daughter he lost.
“The pain never goes away, it only grows stronger,” Hançer said, clutching a photo frame of his 16-year-old daughter, Irmak Leyla Hançer. “We have been coming to her grave regularly, but it never gets easier. The fire that was ignited that day still burns within me.”
Hançer described how he and his daughter had a special bond, and how they used to visit her brother’s grave together to plant flowers. “We pray for him, but it’s not the same without my daughter,” he said. “Every February 6, we are reminded of the tragedy that befell us. We are left to suffer and grieve, waiting for the day when we can be reunited with our daughter.”
