UAE Government Forgives $247,000 Debt for Uzbek Citizen, Paving Way for Homecoming

Uzbek Citizen Receives Assistance from Consulate General in Dubai

Officials from Uzbekistan’s consulate general in Dubai recently came to the aid of a Uzbek citizen who found himself in dire financial straits and in need of help to settle his debts and return home to Uzbekistan.

The individual, identified only as N.J. and born in 1957, first arrived in Dubai back in 1996 for seasonal work. Over the years, he took on various jobs in trade stalls but due to unforeseen circumstances, he ended up staying in the UAE illegally from 2001 until 2025.

Upon learning of his situation, the Consulate General stepped in to provide him with consular and legal assistance, as well as temporary accommodation and meals. It was discovered that during his unauthorized stay, N.J. had accrued a hefty debt totaling 901,600 AED (around $247,013), making it impossible for him to leave the UAE legally.

Fortunately, through negotiations with UAE authorities, the Consulate General was able to secure a full waiver of N.J.’s outstanding debts, clearing the way for his departure. With the support of the Consulate General and the “Center for Assistance to Women and Children” charitable organization, N.J. was able to board a flight from Dubai to Tashkent on February 15, finally returning to his home country of Uzbekistan.

This case serves as a testament to the valuable assistance that diplomatic missions can provide to their citizens in times of need, ensuring their well-being and safe return home.
