UK boosts defense spending
The United Kingdom has announced a significant increase in its defense spending, with plans to allocate an additional £75 billion by 2030. This decision was revealed by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a press conference in Poland, where he also stated that the country’s defense budget will rise to 2.5% of its GDP by the targeted year.
With this increase, the UK is set to become the NATO country with the highest defense expenditure after the United States, reaching a total of 87 billion pounds within the next six years. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of security in Europe and called on allies to take necessary actions to ensure the safety of the region.
The defense budget will focus on three key areas, as outlined by the Prime Minister:
1. Mobilizing the UK defense industrial base: Plans to invest at least an additional £10 billion in ammunition production over the next decade, creating job opportunities and boosting investment across the UK.
2. Modernizing the Armed Forces: Reforming defense procurement processes and establishing a new Defense Innovation Agency to keep the UK at the forefront of modern warfare technology, with a minimum of 5% of the defense budget allocated to research and development.
3. Supporting the defense of Ukraine: The UK Government will provide an additional £500 million this year for ammunition, air defense, and unmanned aerial vehicles to assist Ukraine in enhancing its security.
