Ukraine’s Inability to Supply 100 Tanks

Switzerland Blocks Export of 100 Tanks to Ukraine

Switzerland has prevented defense industry company Ruag AG from exporting approximately 100 tanks, including 96 Leopard 1s from Italy, to Ukraine. The Swiss government deemed the request “contrary to applicable law” and emphasized that as a neutral country, it cannot approve arms sales to active conflict zones. Ruag AG has accepted the decision.

The rejected export request pertains to 96 non-operational Leopard 1 Main Battle Tanks owned by Ruag and currently stored in Italy. The proposal was for the tanks to be refurbished at the Ruag factory in Germany before being shipped to Ukraine.

It is important to note that the Swiss army’s 25 Leopard 2 tanks, which are expected to be transferred to German company Rheinmetall AG, are not connected to this decision. The deal for these tanks has recently gained the support of the Swiss government and is scheduled to occur next year. As part of this agreement, Germany has pledged to keep the tanks within its borders and not send them to Ukraine, utilizing them to strengthen its own armed forces instead.

As a result of Switzerland’s veto, Ukraine will temporarily be unable to acquire approximately 100 Leopard 1 tanks. However, another European company is expected to sign an agreement for the refurbishment of Leopard 1 tanks in the near future.

Numerous western countries are actively preparing to ship main battle tanks and armored combat vehicles to Ukraine. These armored land vehicles are typically transported via Romania or Poland. Additionally, maintenance and repair facilities are being established in allied countries along the border to support the upkeep of these vehicles.

It remains to be seen how this development will impact Ukraine’s defense capabilities and whether alternative arrangements will be made to fulfill its tank requirements.
