Ukrainian Ambassador Urges Hungarian Opera House to Cancel Gala Event Featuring Russian Singer

The Ambassador of Ukraine has requested the cancellation of a Long-Sold Out Orchestra Gala Evening featuring Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko, as announced by New Year’s Eve Ókovács, the Director of the Hungarian State Opera House.
In a letter shared on Facebook by the Opera House director, Ambassador Sándor Fegyir expressed concerns about Netrebko’s ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading to her contract termination by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The ambassador warned that Netrebko’s performance could be used as a platform to spread narratives contrary to European values and human rights principles.
Despite the request to cancel the concert, Director Ókovács defended the decision to invite Netrebko, emphasizing that art should not be silenced during times of conflict. He highlighted Netrebko’s status as one of the greatest sopranos in the world and emphasized her non-political nature.
The director underscored the importance of preserving the peace and neutrality of the Hungarian State Opera House, noting that the institution employs talented Ukrainian and Russian dancers who contribute to the soothing and comforting power of the arts.
Amidst the ongoing ceasefire efforts, Director Ókovács extended an invitation to Ambassador Fegyir to attend the performance, emphasizing Hungary’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful and culturally rich environment.
The controversy surrounding Netrebko’s performance highlights the complex intersection of art and politics in today’s global landscape, raising questions about the role of artists in times of conflict.
