Ukrainian Intel: Drone Boats Down Two Russian Su-30s with AIM-9 Missiles

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Makes History with Drone-Boat Downing of Fighter Jets
In a groundbreaking military achievement, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR) has reportedly downed two Su-30 Flanker multirole fighters using AIM-9 Sidewinder infrared-guided air-to-air missiles launched from Magura-7 drone boats. This information was disclosed by Lt. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the agency, during an exclusive interview with The War Zone.
This incident marks a significant milestone as it is the first time fighter aircraft have been brought down by drone boats, and it also represents the inaugural use of the AIM-9 missile from such platforms. "It’s a historical moment," Budanov stated, though it’s important to note that The War Zone has yet to independently verify these claims.
The event occurred in the Black Sea on Friday, as Budanov elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the operation. Earlier reports from both Ukrainian sources and Russian Telegram channels had indicated that at least one Flanker was shot down using an adapted infrared-guided R-73 (AA-11 Archer) missile.
As the military landscape continues to evolve with innovative technologies, this incident highlights the increasing prominence of unmanned systems in modern warfare. The successful engagement of manned fighter jets by drone-operated platforms opens new avenues for tactical operations and anti-air capabilities.
While the details of this operation remain unverified, it undoubtedly signals a shift in aerial combat dynamics and could influence how future conflicts unfold in the region and beyond.
