UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution on Turkmenistan’s Permanent Neutrality

The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution on the "Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan" on March 21. This resolution was co-authored by 67 states and highlights the importance of using neutral countries’ territories for peace talks. Additionally, it recognizes Turkmenistan’s proposal to establish a Chamber of Mediation for Peace under the auspices of the UN.

The Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN, Aksoltan Atayeva, emphasized that the status of permanent neutrality is at the core of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy. This status serves as the foundation for implementing the country’s balanced peacekeeping doctrine on a global scale.

Since the first resolution on Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 12, 1995, Turkmenistan has received continuous support for its neutral course. This course has proven to be effective in implementing preventive diplomacy at regional and global levels.

Neutrality is a fundamental element of both Turkmenistan’s foreign and domestic policies. It is enshrined in the Constitutional Law of Turkmenistan on Permanent Neutrality and reflects the historical heritage and traditions of the Turkmen people, emphasizing peace, dialogue, and mutual respect in state-building efforts.

Turkmenistan’s leadership has consistently maintained the neutral course, advancing peacekeeping initiatives and reinforcing the country’s non-aligned status. Under this neutral policy, key institutions such as the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat and the Zone of Peace and Confidence in Central Asia have been established.

In recognition of Turkmenistan’s dedication to neutrality, the UN General Assembly declared December 12 as the International Day of Neutrality in 2017. The Group of Friends of Neutrality was also formed at the UN, and a global campaign is currently underway as part of the International Year of Peace and Trust.

The commitment of Turkmenistan to neutrality and peacekeeping efforts on the international stage continues to be recognized and supported by the global community.
