UN Secretary-General Condemns Israel and Yemen’s Escalation of Tensions in the Region
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his concerns over the escalating tensions between Israel and Yemen in recent days, as shared by Deputy Spokesperson Stephanie Tremblay.
In a written statement, Guterres condemned Israel’s air attacks on Sanaa International Airport, Red Sea ports, and power plants in Yemen, calling them “worrying.” The Secretary-General noted that one of the UN Humanitarian Air Service crew members was injured during the attacks, which also affected a high-level UN delegation led by World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The statement highlighted that at least 3 people lost their lives and dozens were injured as a result of Israel’s recent attacks, following a year of provocations from the Houthis in the Red Sea, posing a threat to regional stability and freedom of navigation.
Expressing deep concern over the risk of further escalation in the region, Guterres urged all relevant parties to cease military actions and exercise maximum restraint. He also reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN and other staff members who have been arbitrarily detained by the Houthis.
