Uncovering Ancient Petroglyphs: Volunteers in Kazakhstan Make Bronze Age Discovery During Environmental Campaign

Bronze Age Petroglyphs Discovered in Kazakhstan’s Zhambyl Region

Volunteers participating in the nationwide Taza (Clean) Kazakhstan environmental campaign made a remarkable discovery in the Zhambyl region. During the campaign’s focus on landscaping efforts around historical and cultural monuments, the volunteers stumbled upon petroglyphs dating back to the Bronze Age near the Aktogay village in the Sarysu district.

The petroglyphs, which were spotted at the base of towering ridges, depict scenes from daily life and the worldviews of people from the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. Archeologists uncovered over 100 petroglyphs featuring hunting scenes and animals such as argali, sheep, and double-humped camels.

According to archeologist Sauran Kaliyev, the petroglyphs are a significant find as they offer a glimpse into the history of the region. The discovery, comprising a 20-25 meter long and 1.5-2 meters high mountain layer, is a rare occurrence in the Zhambyl Region.

Local archeologists are now working to determine the exact dating of the petroglyphs, with plans to conduct a comprehensive study with the help of experts from both within Kazakhstan and internationally. The goal is to designate the site as a location of national or even international significance, joining the list of UNESCO-protected historical and cultural monuments in the region.

The Zhambyl Region is home to thousands of historical and cultural monuments, with efforts underway to protect and preserve these important sites. Last year saw the discovery of 46 historical monuments in the region, with experts hopeful that this recent find of Bronze Age petroglyphs will contribute to the list of protected sites.

The uncovering of these petroglyphs adds to the rich tapestry of Kazakhstan’s history and showcases the importance of preserving and studying the country’s ancient cultural heritage.
