Date: July 17, 2023
Turkey has achieved a significant diplomatic success with its grain export initiative, which has already made history. Over 33 million tons of grain products have been shipped to the global markets, thereby averting a potential grain crisis.
Despite the Kremlin’s announcement of the deal being stopped, President Erdogan remains hopeful. He expressed his belief that his Russian counterpart, President Putin, desires the continuation of this humanitarian bridge. President Erdogan indicated that he could initiate a phone call with Putin to discuss the matter further. He stated, “With this meeting, and by engaging in talks with both foreign affairs interlocutors, I hope that we can swiftly resolve any issues and continue our journey without any interruptions.”
The center established in Istanbul, as part of the Black Sea initiative, has played a crucial role in transporting a staggering 33 million tons of grain since August 2022 through more than 1,000 ships.
The grain corridor has been strategically operational during specific periods, and Turkey’s efforts have resulted in its extension three times already. Now, all eyes are on whether Turkey’s diplomatic initiatives will lead to another extension of the grain corridor agreement.
Out of the grain passing through the corridor, 40% has been delivered to Europe, 30% to Asia, 13% to Turkey, 12% to Africa, and 5% to the Middle East. This distribution highlights the global impact of Turkey’s grain export initiative.
The success of the grain export initiative has been crucial in maintaining stability in the global grain markets and ensuring access to essential food supplies. It showcases Turkey’s diplomatic prowess and commitment to addressing global challenges effectively.
In related news, NATO has issued a statement condemning Russia in light of the grain agreement. Photos and updates can be found on the CNNTurk website.
