The Significance of ‘Tashrik Takbir’ During Eid al-Adha
On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world participate in a special practice known as “tashrik takbir.” This tradition involves reciting a specific phrase, “Allahu akbar Allahu akbar la ilahe illallahu vallahu akbar Allahu akbar wa lillahi’l-hamd,” a total of 23 times. The recitation takes place between the morning prayer and the afternoon prayer on the fourth day of Eid.
According to the Presidency of Religious Affairs, the word “tashrik” in Arabic means “chopping and drying meat.” This term originated from a historical practice where the meat from the sacrificed animals in Mina, Saudi Arabia, was left to dry in the sun on the second, third, and fourth days of the festival. Consequently, these three days came to be known as the “eyyam-ı teşrik” or “teşrik days,” referring to the meat drying process.
The term “takbir” signifies the act of glorifying Allah. During the tashrik takbir, Muslims express their devotion and gratitude towards Allah through the recitation of this phrase. It serves as a reminder of the significance of sacrifice and symbolizes unity among the believers.
It is important to note that sacrificing an animal is not a prerequisite for reciting the takbir of tashrik. Even those who do not participate in the sacrificial ritual are obliged to recite the takbir. The recitation occurs once after each of the 23 obligatory prayers, starting from the morning prayer of the day of Arafa until the afternoon prayer on the fourth day of Eid.
Eid al-Adha is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. Muslims worldwide honor this event by sacrificing animals and distributing the meat to the less fortunate, relatives, and friends.
