Unexpected price discrepancy: Item found on counter for 150 liras
Fish prices were expected to drop in a city with cold weather, but recently horse mackerel and anchovies were found on sale at the stalls for a surprising 150 liras. In Zonguldak, horse mackerel was specifically being sold at this price point, much to the surprise of customers.
Fisherman Zeki Beybeyoğlu commented on the situation, stating, “Reminding that they sell cheap fish throughout the season, horse mackerel and anchovies drop to 50 liras. When fish is scarce, prices rise. We buy it higher than normal.” He further explained, “When fish become plentiful, we sell them at a bargain price. We already sold the fish at a bargain price this year. We are trying to provide suitable fish. At one point, horse mackerel and anchovies reached 50 lira. When there is abundance, fish prices fall.”
Despite expectations of lower prices, the current market rate for fish is around 150 liras. Beybeyoğlu added, “But right now, we’re not saying it’s a little, we’re not saying it’s a lot. Middling. Our fish are going in the 150 band. I think even this is normal. I think 150 lira seems normal to our people.”
