Hamas Releases Israeli and Foreign Hostages, Israel Releases Palestinian Prisoners
The world held its breath as Hamas freed 13 Israeli and 11 foreign hostages and Israel released 39 Palestinian prisoners. The tension was palpable as 24 women and 15 boys, who had been held in two prisons in Haifa in northern Israel, were transferred to the Ofer detention center in the West Bank. From there, they were handed over to International Red Cross officials and moved to the Beitunya checkpoint, where thousands of people eagerly awaited their arrival.
The atmosphere at Beitunya was electric as the convoy carrying the released Palestinian prisoners was welcomed with fireworks, slogans, and flags. The men, women, and children under the age of 18 were joyfully reunited with their families. Merah Bekir, who spent eight years in Israeli prisons, expressed his surprise at regaining his freedom. “I had no idea about what was happening outside and what was happening in Gaza,” he said, as he was reunited with his family in the Beit Hanina neighborhood of Jerusalem.
Bekir also expressed his desire to study law at university, emphasizing the pain he felt for the Palestinians who lost their lives in Gaza. Another released prisoner, Ragad el Fenni, described the welcome at Beitunya as “magnificent” and expressed her surprise, stating, “We did not expect this much.”
Hanan Bergusi, one of the freed prisoners, shouted slogans praising Hamas’s armed wing, Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, and credited the resistance movement for her freedom. The release of Palestinian prisoners is a significant event, especially considering that there are more than 7,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, with 6,000 of them being held for security reasons. Many of these individuals are still awaiting trial. It is also worth noting that Israel is the only country in the world that incarcerates children. As both sides continue to grapple with the complex issues surrounding the conflict, the recent exchange of prisoners is a glimmer of hope for progress towards peace.
