A school in the Jalal-Abad region of Kyrgyzstan is currently under investigation after 42 students were poisoned with an unknown substance. According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan, medical staff had given a lecture to 100 students in grades 6-7-8 following an order from the city administration. Half an hour into the lecture, four students began to feel unwell and soon lost consciousness.

The teachers called the ambulance, and all 42 affected students were taken to the General Medical Practice Center in Kochkor-Ata. 14 of them have already been discharged home, while the remaining 28 are still under medical supervision. Fortunately, all students’ conditions are currently stable.

Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident with more information expected to be released in due course. In line with the local administration’s direction and the Centre for Disease Prevention and Surveillance, the school has postponed classes from May 12 to May 20 and from May 13 to May 25. During this time, the school will also undergo disinfection work.

The affected school has a total of 1,132 students, and the incident highlights the need for further measures to protect the health and safety of Kyrgyz students.
