Unveiling the ‘Digital Silk Road’: Multiterabit Data Transmission beneath the Caspian Sea

The 27th meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization recently took place in Shusha, where the “Digital Silk Road” project was presented. Executives from AzerTelecom, a leading telecommunications company, shared information about the strategic importance and key components of the project. Interfax-Azerbaijan provided coverage of the event.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that the digital infrastructure to be developed within the country and along the bottom of the Caspian Sea, connecting Azerbaijan with the countries of Central Asia, will establish a new digital telecommunications corridor between Europe and Asia. This corridor will play a pivotal role in the region’s future by enabling multiterabit data transmission and fostering digitalization.
AzerTelecom and Türkmentelekom are collaborating on a joint project for the construction, ownership, and utilization of a fiber optic communication line along the bottom of the Caspian Sea, connecting Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan (specifically Turkmenbashi and Siyazan).
Furthermore, it was previously announced that a fiber-optic communication line linking Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan through the Caspian Sea will be operational by the end of 2024.
The implementation of the Digital Silk Road project holds great promise for enhancing connectivity and facilitating the exchange of information and ideas between Europe and Asia. As this initiative progresses, it is expected to pave the way for greater economic cooperation, regional development, and technological advancements.
