
Update on Istanbul Dam Occupancy Rates

The water levels in Istanbul’s dams have been steadily rising, according to data from the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (ISKI). Last year, the occupancy rate in dams had dropped to 27.49 percent on November 21, but this year the average occupancy rate has increased to 80.15 percent as of today.
The distribution of water in various dams is as follows: 64.04 percent in Alibey, 75.28 percent in Büyükçekmece, 78.37 percent in Sarlık, 94.04 percent in Elmalı, 39.58 percent in Istrancalar, 85.25 percent in Kazandere, 84.33 percent in Pabuçdere, 58.62 percent in Sazlıdere, and 80.62 percent in Terkos. The total accumulation volume of water in the dams and ponds is currently at 680.58 million cubic meters, out of a maximum capacity of 868 million 683 thousand cubic meters.
In addition to the dams, Melen and Yeşilçay, which supply water to the city, have provided 242.82 million cubic meters of water this year. The city of Istanbul consumed 2 million 652 thousand cubic meters of water just yesterday.
Looking at the failure rates of the last 10 years, dam occupancy rates on April 1 were 94.66 percent in 2015, 87.56 percent in 2016, 88.89 percent in 2017, 90.04 percent in 2018, 93.7 percent in 2019, 64.59 percent in 2020, 73.18 percent in 2021, and 81.85 percent in 2022. The current rate of 80.15 percent marks a positive trend in water levels in the region.
Overall, the increase in water levels in Istanbul’s dams is a positive development for the city’s water supply and sustainability.
