Terminal Expansion Underway at Debrecen Airport
Debrecen Airport in eastern Hungary is undergoing terminal expansion works, with a significant investment of HUF 300 million (approximately EUR 751,000) dedicated to enhancing the passenger hall and the security control area. This development aims to improve the overall airport experience for travelers passing through Debrecen.
The expansion project includes the installation of new equipment that eliminates the need for passengers to remove large electronic devices from their hand luggage during security checks. As reported by airportal.hu, this new equipment will streamline the security screening process and reduce waiting times for passengers moving into the transit area.
The ongoing investment is expected to increase the useful floor area of the terminal by nearly ten percent. As the number of flights operating from Debrecen continues to rise, modernizing and expanding key areas like waiting halls, security checkpoints, and passport control facilities is essential to accommodate the growing passenger traffic.
Despite a temporary decline in flight numbers in recent years, the airport operator remains optimistic about future growth. The expansion project is anticipated to lead to an increase in available destinations, with twelve new routes expected to be serviced from Debrecen by 2024.
Tamás Király, Managing Director of Debrecen International Airport Ltd., expressed confidence in a prosperous summer season ahead, highlighting the airport’s resilience and readiness to adapt to changing travel patterns.
The construction works are being carried out without disrupting normal airport operations, ensuring that passengers can continue to travel smoothly through Debrecen Airport. The long-term goal is to establish Debrecen as a key regional hub, with the capacity to serve up to two to three million passengers annually.
