Urgench Airport Set for Modernization with South Korean Partnership
President Mirziyoyev Launches Modernization of Urgench International Airport
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev commenced his visit to the Khorezm region by inspecting the modernization project for Urgench International Airport. During this visit, he officially handed over the airport’s management to Incheon International Airport Corporation, a prominent South Korean company.
Addressing Infrastructure Challenges
The current infrastructure of Urgench International Airport has been deemed inadequate, struggling to meet the increasing demands of both local residents and visitors. With a limited capacity of just 400 passengers per hour, the airport is in urgent need of enhancements to improve air connectivity.
An international tender, announced on August 1, 2024, attracted bids from eight companies across the globe, including those from France, Turkey, and Qatar. After careful consideration, the interagency tender commission selected South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation as the winning bidder.
Meeting with Corporate Leaders
President Mirziyoyev engaged with the leadership and project team from Incheon Airport. The president highlighted the company’s global reputation, noting that Incheon Airport ranks as the third busiest in terms of capacity and is recognized for its high service quality. With Urgench becoming the second airport under this company’s management, plans for renovation and effective management strategies were discussed.
Comprehensive Project Overview
The total investment for this ambitious project is estimated at $223 million. The scope of work includes constructing a new runway and both passenger and cargo terminals. Modern lighting and signaling systems will be installed in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, alongside the purchase of specialized equipment.
Construction and renovation are expected to be completed between 2025 and 2027. Once the modernization is completed, the airport will have the capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A350. The new terminal is projected to span 39,000 square meters, increasing passenger capacity to 1,300 per hour.
Embracing Cultural Identity
A concept design for the future terminal was unveiled during the presentation. President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of blending national heritage and cultural identity into both the exterior and interior designs of the new building, ensuring that it reflects the unique character of Uzbekistan.
This significant investment into Urgench International Airport is set to enhance not only local infrastructure but also improve the overall air travel experience in the region, ultimately contributing to its economic development.
