US Congress’ Youngest Jewish Member Boycotts Netanyahu’s Speech
The President of the Union for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Rick Jacobs, recently spoke out against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza. In an interview with the American MSNBC channel, Jacobs expressed his outrage over the brutal military operation in Gaza that has resulted in the deaths of over 39,000 Palestinians.
Jacobs criticized Netanyahu’s orders to bomb Gaza for 10 months, causing widespread destruction to infrastructure such as schools, refugee camps, ambulances, and hospitals. He condemned the displacement of the civilian population and the devastating impact on Palestinian families, calling it unjustifiable.
According to Jacobs, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with nearly 1 million Palestinians facing severe hunger due to the lack of access to aid and resources. He accused Netanyahu of perpetuating the conflict out of fear of being held accountable, despite losing support in Israel.
Jacobs emphasized the need for a ceasefire and a two-state solution to end the violence, stating that there is no military solution to the conflict. He refused to attend Netanyahu’s speech, fearing that his presence would be misconstrued as support for the prime minister’s policies.
In contrast to Netanyahu’s claims of minimal civilian casualties and no hunger in Gaza, Jacobs highlighted the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people.
