US Embassy Expresses Concerns over Parliament’s Removal of Atyr Abdrakhmatova
Kyrgyz Parliament’s decision to remove Ombudsman Atyr Abdrakhmatova has raised concerns among various organizations about transparency and accountability in the government. Following Abdrakhmatova’s report on the state of human rights and freedoms in the country, the U.S. Embassy expressed its worry about the government’s commitment towards transparency and accountability. The decision is also said to be inconsistent with Kyrgyzstan’s membership in the Human Rights Council, which has been noted by the Embassy. The role of the Ombudsman’s office in upholding the rule of law and promoting good governance has been emphasized, and it is believed that the Parliament’s decision could have negative consequences on the country’s human rights situation. The vote in favor of Abdrakhmatova’s dismissal came from 50 deputies, while only five were against it.
