USAID and WFP Team Up to Combat Food Insecurity in Tajikistan

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a generous contribution of US$7 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support vulnerable households in Tajikistan facing food insecurity.

This funding will enable WFP to assist around 15,000 households by providing cash in exchange for work to build productive and protective assets. These assets will enhance the resilience of over 24,000 households, benefiting a total of 120,000 people over the next two years.

Manuel Micaller, the U.S. Ambassador, stated, “We are proud to partner with the World Food Programme to support vulnerable households at risk of falling deeper into poverty due to global price shocks for food and fertilizer following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Adham Musallam, WFP Representative and Country Director in Tajikistan, expressed gratitude for the U.S. Government’s commitment to fighting food insecurity in the country. The contribution will address the immediate food needs of the most food-insecure people with cash while improving their long-term food security and resilience, especially among smallholder farmers led by women and youth.

According to the 2023 FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission, around 1.56 million people in Tajikistan were facing acute food insecurity, with approximately 50,000 severely food insecure. WFP is closely monitoring the food security and market situation at the household level and mobilizing funds to support food-insecure families.

USAID is a lead actor in driving development results globally, while the United Nations World Food Programme is the largest humanitarian organization, using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for those recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.
