USNS Brunswick Sent to Support Relief Efforts in Sudan
The United States has sent a military transport ship, USNS Brunswick, to assist with the evacuations in Sudan amid ongoing clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The ship is temporarily docked in Port Sudan, and it is expected that hundreds of people will be evacuated. Meanwhile, parties in Sudan have agreed to extend the ceasefire for another 72 hours, which has been in place since April 25. The United Nations (UN) will also send an envoy to the region. The conflict has led to a deepening humanitarian crisis, with the death toll rising to 528 as of the latest report. Thailand has already evacuated up to 210 of its citizens from the country. With the Royal Thai Army’s first evacuation phase complete, a second plane on Friday pulled out a further 132 Thai citizens, two Chinese and one Indonesian. The evacuees were welcomed by high-ranking Thai officials at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok.
