Uzbek President Mirziyoyev and UN Secretary-General Guterres Collaborate on New SDG Framework
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev Hosts United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres
On July 1, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, welcomed United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to the Kuksaroy residence in the country’s capital. Guterres, who is on an official visit to Uzbekistan, expressed his gratitude to the President for the invitation and warm reception.
During their meeting, President Mirziyoyev highlighted the UN’s support for the reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan as part of the “Uzbekistan-2030” strategy. The discussions centered around global and regional peace, stability, and sustainable development, as well as the ongoing cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The fruitful collaboration between Uzbekistan and the UN was praised, with 140 joint programs and projects currently underway. In recent years, Uzbekistan’s initiatives have led to the adoption of 10 special resolutions by the UN General Assembly, showcasing the country’s commitment to international cooperation and development.
Various achievements were highlighted during the talks, including Uzbekistan’s election to the Economic and Social Council and the Administrative Council of the International Labor Organization. Additionally, Uzbekistan now has a representative on the UN Human Rights Committee, marking a significant milestone for the country’s engagement with the UN.
The discussions also touched upon important international and regional issues, such as enhancing regional transport connectivity, ensuring food and energy security, and supporting the Afghan people. President Mirziyoyev expressed strong support for Secretary-General Guterres’s initiatives to strengthen international security and stability.
As the meeting concluded, both parties agreed to develop a framework program for cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN on Sustainable Development Goals for the period 2026-2030. This agreement underscores the commitment of Uzbekistan and the UN to working together towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
