Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to Install Transboundary Water Meters

Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to Install Water Meters for Accurate Measurement of Water Consumption

In a recent agreement, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have decided to install meters at each other’s locations to accurately calculate the volume of water consumed by both countries. The press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan reported on this new development.

The installation of these water meters will enable both countries to exchange information about mutual water consumption online. Experts from both nations are currently in discussions to determine the locations where the meters will be placed. Additionally, negotiations are underway with international organizations to involve them in this project.

Previously, transboundary gauging stations named “Patar” and “Sarvak” were installed along the Northern and Greater Fergana Canals on the border of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. This move allows for more accurate measurements of water flow for irrigation purposes. The equipment used for measuring water consumption in the border area was outdated, and the gauging stations were updated with the support of the Blue Peace Central Asia initiative of the Swiss government.

Looking ahead, it was announced in 2023 that Kazakhstan intends to modify the agreement on the use of water and energy resources in the Syrdarya River basin with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Kazakh side has raised concerns about the ecological state of the river due to pollutants originating from Uzbekistan.

This new agreement and the installation of water meters reflect the commitment of both countries to enhance cooperation in the management of water resources and ensure sustainable and responsible use of this vital natural resource.
