Uzbekistan’s Nuclear Ambitions: Groundbreaking Plans for a Small Modular Power Plant
The long-anticipated small modular nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is on the brink of reality, with the first concrete expected to be poured within the next year. This significant development follows the resolution of all legal matters surrounding the project, as announced by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
Located in the Jizzakh region, the forthcoming small nuclear power plant is set to advance Uzbekistan’s energy infrastructure. Likhachev confirmed that the necessary legal processes have been finalized, paving the way for essential project steps, including detailed planning, licensing, and the actual pouring of concrete.
During a recent interaction at the International Industrial Exhibition "INNOPROM. Central Asia," Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with Likhachev to discuss the progress and potential of nuclear energy collaboration in Uzbekistan. The conversation also encompassed broader initiatives dealing with the application of nuclear technology in agriculture and medicine, as well as the education of specialists via the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI located in Tashkent.
Likhachev expressed confidence in the project’s future, stating, “When — not if — the leadership of Uzbekistan returns to the topic of building a large nuclear power plant, we will already have proposals ready.” These proposals will focus not only on the design of additional facilities but will also significantly involve local manufacturers, emphasizing a commitment to localization.
The project will be characterized by international cooperation, integrating advanced practices in electrical and mechanical engineering, while the nuclear technologies, including the reactor island, will be of Russian origin.
As Uzbekistan continues to position itself as a key player in the realm of peaceful nuclear energy, the collaboration with Rosatom marks a new chapter in the country’s ambitious energy strategy and its commitment to sustainable development.
