Uzbekistan and UK to Strengthen Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation

Uzbek Ambassador meets with British Group in Inter-Parliamentary Union
The Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United Kingdom, Ravshan Usmanov, recently met with representatives of the British Group in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (BGIPU) to discuss the potential for enhancing inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries. The meeting, which took place in the United Kingdom, was attended by members of the Labor Party in the lower house of the British Parliament, as well as BGIPU Vice-Chair Alex Sobel and Catherine West, along with House of Lords members Godfrey Cromwell and Kurban Hussain.
The BGIPU, as a founding member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, serves as the representative of the British Parliament in decision-making at the Union and facilitates consultations with parliaments of other member countries. The BGIPU Executive Committee comprises 28 representatives from various parties and both parliamentary chambers.
During the meeting, the participants were briefed on the comprehensive reforms being implemented in various spheres of Uzbek society and the state, including the development of parliamentarism, human rights and freedoms, and the strengthening of civil society institutions. These reforms reflect the dynamic changes occurring in what is referred to as the New Uzbekistan.
The British MPs acknowledged the vigorous pace of the democratic transformations in Uzbekistan, having experienced them firsthand during a delegation visit to the republic from September 25 to 29, 2023.
Both parties agreed on the importance of intensifying inter-parliamentary dialogue, recognizing that reinforcing the Uzbek-British inter-parliamentary dialogue would create additional mechanisms for the future realization of mutually beneficial joint projects in areas of shared interest.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain contact and discuss practical steps to tap into the significant potential for expanded interaction between the legislative bodies of the two countries. This development signifies a positive step in strengthening the partnership between Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom.
