Uzbekistan Boosts Gas Exports to China by 27% Amid Growing Imports
Uzbekistan Boosts Natural Gas Exports to China and Increases Imports
Recent data from the Statistics Agency has shown that Uzbekistan has seen a significant increase in its natural gas exports to China and imports from neighboring countries. From January to November, Uzbekistan’s gas imports from Turkmenistan and Russia skyrocketed by 2.8 times, reaching a total of $1.55 billion. In November alone, monthly imports reached $186.8 million. This shift marks a historical moment for Uzbekistan, as it has transitioned from being a net gas exporter to a net importer for the first time since gaining independence.
Despite a slight slowdown in November compared to October, Uzbekistan’s gas exports to China totaled $53 million, a decrease from $60.9 million. Year-to-date exports reached $593.4 million, showcasing a 16.5% year-on-year growth.
China’s General Administration of Customs reports slightly different figures, estimating Uzbekistan’s gas exports to China at $667.3 million from January to November, a 27.1% increase from the previous year. While monthly exports in November dropped to $79.4 million, they remained significantly higher than the corresponding figure from the previous year.
Although Uzbekistan has made strides in boosting its gas exports to China, Turkmenistan still leads the pack in natural gas exports to China, delivering $8.82 billion worth of gas this year. Russia follows with a 25% increase, amounting to $7.35 billion. Kazakhstan and Myanmar round out the top exporters, with $1.28 billion and $1.27 billion respectively.
Overall, Uzbekistan’s growing presence in the natural gas market demonstrates its ability to adapt and engage in international trade partnerships, further solidifying its position in the global energy sector.
