Uzbekistan Deepens Collaboration with UN Women
Today, on May 14, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev welcomed a UN delegation led by the Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Women agency, Sima Sami Bahous. The delegation’s visit to Uzbekistan was in connection with their attendance at the Asian Women’s Forum held in Samarkand.
During the meeting, the leader of the UN Women agency conveyed greetings and well wishes from Secretary-General António Guterres to the President of Uzbekistan. The ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan aimed at enhancing the status and condition of women in society were lauded by the UN delegation.
Discussions took place on how to further strengthen the partnership between Uzbekistan and the UN Women structure. Uzbekistan’s commitment to international conventions on women’s rights and active participation in the UN Commission’s work were highlighted.
The successful outcomes of the Asian Women’s Forum were praised, with an emphasis on the importance of transforming it into a permanent platform for dialogue on expanding women’s rights in the Asian region. Both parties agreed on the necessity of developing a bilateral Program of Cooperation for the medium term, with a focus on specific projects and regional interaction.
The proposal to establish a UN Women country office in Uzbekistan was supported during the meeting. This move signifies a step towards advancing gender equality and empowering women in Uzbekistan.
