Uzbekistan faces surge in cyberattacks with over 12 million recorded in 2024
In 2024, Uzbekistan experienced a significant increase in cyberattacks and fraud cases, with cybercriminals using a variety of tactics to steal money from unsuspecting individuals. According to the Cybersecurity Center, there were over 12 million cyberattack attempts in 2024, up from 11 million in 2023. Fraud cases also rose by 34%, with payment card scams accounting for around 35% of all fraud-related complaints.
One of the main reasons for the surge in fraud is the growing number of bank card users in Uzbekistan. The country has seen an increase in bank card users, with the number surpassing 55 million in 2024 from fewer than 40 million at the beginning of the year.
Identifying and recovering funds from cyber fraud is challenging, as criminals can operate from anywhere in the world, making it difficult to pinpoint their location. Fraud trends have evolved over time, with a shift from phone call scams to viral programs distributed through APK files on platforms like Telegram. These malicious programs often request sensitive permissions and gather personal information to be used by criminals.
One common scam in Uzbekistan is the “Hello, Mom” scam, where criminals pretend to be a relative involved in a fake emergency, asking for money to resolve the situation. Another tactic involves fake transfer scams, where victims receive a message about a mistaken money transfer and are asked to return the funds.
To protect yourself from fraudsters, it is crucial to verify the source of information, pay attention to web addresses, and think critically. Avoid sharing personal information or bank details, and never transfer money or install suspicious apps based on unsolicited messages. Legitimate companies will not ask for sensitive information over the phone or via SMS.
