Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan Sign Agreement for Kambarata HPP Construction and Operation
The Ministries of Energy of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan have recently signed a trilateral agreement on the preparation for the construction and operation of the Kambarata HPP-1 project. This significant development took place during the International Energy Investment Forum of Kyrgyzstan, which was held on June 10-11 in Vienna, Austria with the support of the World Bank.
The forum aimed to showcase Kyrgyzstan’s efforts in reforming the energy sector, discuss investment opportunities such as the Kambarata HPP-1 project, and highlight the potential for advancing the transition to clean energy in Central Asia. Over 200 representatives from the energy sector, including officials from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, as well as countries like Austria, France, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and various international financial institutions, participated in the event.
During the forum, the Ministries of Energy of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan came together to sign the trilateral agreement for the preparation and execution of the Kambarata HPP-1 construction and operation project. Additionally, the parties agreed to enhance cooperation in the energy sector, with a specific focus on renewable energy sources, and establish mutually beneficial mechanisms for the utilization of water and energy resources at Kambarata HPP-1.
The conclusion of the forum saw the formation of the Coordinating Donor Committee for the construction of Kambarata HPP-1. The initial members of this committee include the World Bank, OPEC Fund, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Islamic Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, among others. The Government of Kyrgyzstan has emphasized that interested parties are welcome to join the committee, with the first meeting scheduled to take place this fall.
This trilateral agreement and the establishment of the Coordinating Donor Committee mark a significant step towards the realization of the Kambarata HPP-1 project and the advancement of clean energy initiatives in Central Asia. With cooperation and investment from various stakeholders, the region looks set to make strides towards a more sustainable energy future.
