Uzbekistan Plans to Complete Tariff Reforms by 2025
Uzbekistan to Conclude Energy Tariff Reforms by 2025
Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Kuchkarov has announced that the Uzbek government plans to finalize the primary phase of its energy tariff reforms by 2025. This announcement was made during the International Gas Forum held in St. Petersburg on October 10.
Kuchkarov highlighted that Uzbekistan has seen robust economic growth in recent years, with a growth rate exceeding 6%. However, the country’s high energy consumption relative to its gross domestic product (GDP) has presented challenges, with costs surpassing those of other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
He mentioned that the increasing population has led to a surge in gas demand, but the energy expenditure of Uzbekistan’s economy, particularly in older industries like gas-fired power plants, is not efficient. This has created a dual challenge of meeting growing demand while enhancing energy efficiency across the economy.
Considering that traditional approaches to energy conservation have not been effective, the government initiated energy tariff reforms in 2023. Kuchkarov expressed optimism that the primary phase of these reforms will be completed next year, encouraging both the population and businesses to use energy resources more judiciously.
The reforms aim to boost energy efficiency and ensure that citizens and businesses benefit from sustainable energy practices. With these measures in place, Uzbekistan is taking significant steps towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
