Uzbekistan Plans to Produce Green Hydrogen

Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has initiated a groundbreaking project to establish a green hydrogen production capacity of 3,000 tons per year in the city of Chirchik. Partnering with ACWA Power Company of Saudi Arabia, the Uzkimyosanoat JSC is spearheading this pilot project, which aims to harness wind energy for the production of green ammonia.

The first phase of the project will see the installation of wind turbines with a capacity of 52 MW in the Bukhara region, producing 3,000 tons of hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will then be processed into mineral fertilizers, while also covering the consumption of electrolyzers.

Looking ahead, the project envisions the installation of wind turbines with a capacity of 2.4 GW across the country, leading to the production of 500,000 tons of green ammonia from green hydrogen every year. It is anticipated that the mineral fertilizers produced through this green energy initiative may fetch 15-20% higher prices in the global market, signaling a potential boon for Uzbekistan’s economy.

The project is also placing a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, as the use of natural gas in fertilizer production is expected to decrease significantly, resulting in an annual saving of approximately 33 million cubic meters of natural gas. Additionally, the project will utilize technologies from the renowned Chinese company, LONGi.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s initiative marks a significant step towards the use of green and environmentally friendly energy solutions in Uzbekistan. The shift towards green hydrogen and renewable energy sources is not only expected to elevate the country’s agricultural and industrial sectors but also enhance the competitiveness of Uzbek products in the global market.
